I'm a smoker. I'm not proud of it
but it's the only vice I have
and everyone needs at least one right?
There are healthier vices I suppose,
like pornography, crossword puzzles,
but until I lose interest in this one,
I'm a smoker.
So, do I have a right to smoke?
Yes. Legally I do, outdoors anyway.
Should I smoke?
No. It's not healthy for me, I know. I've been told.
But everyone's got to die of something, right?
Am I rationalizing? Of course.
Can I really afford the cost in dollars to smoke?
No. And the cost keeps rising through taxation.
In fact 60 - 80% of the cost of a pack of cigarettes (in 2004) was tax!
No doubt, it's even higher today.
The reasoning behind the taxation is to deter smoking, fund programs
to help people quit and recoup smoking related health care costs.
And yet, I still smoke.
Because until the manufacture and sale of cigarettes has been outlawed
I am free to smoke, if I so choose.
